๐ŸŽฎ What can you expect from our students?

In our Fontys ICT Game Design & Technology (GDT) track, students can journey the following path:

Semester 2: Game Development (starting September 2025)

More information coming soon.

Semester 3/4: Game Design

During the semester, students first learn game analysis and design principles. They then design their own video game project and develop it using a game engine such as Unity3D or Unreal5. Asset creation plays a role but the goal is creating the right feel, usually with available or adapted assets.

In the second part, they apply their experience on an industry project. That is where you as a partner come in. Our students translate your problem or opportunity into a design challenge. They analyze, design, and develop a prototype creating an experience for a specific target audience using playful elements. The final product depends on your question. It can be e.g. serious, cross-media, VR or entertainment.

Our students do not deliver releasable work within this short timeframe. Instead, they excel in creating fast prototypes for exploring new avenues validating whether the idea should be developed further.

Semester 5: GDT - Internship

Students work an entire semester at your company on a game design related challenge.

Semester 6/7: Game Production

Taking it up a notch, students form their own game studio teams. Some of these teams work on a project of a partner. Where in GDT-Basic they focus on creating a fast prototype, now students work towards a vertical slice of the game and pitch this to industry partners in the Dragons’ Den event. They then continue to work towards a playable end product.

Semester 8: GDT - Graduation

Students work an entire semester at your company on a game design related challenge.

Their learning goals (simplified):

๐Ÿ” Analyze - Define a design challenge taking the client, context and audience into account.

โ˜•๏ธ Advice - Recommend about important decisions in the game design process and communicate these recommendations to relevant stakeholders.

๐ŸŽฒ Design - Design and validate a game using existing frameworks, theories, and models.

๐Ÿ‘พ Realize - Develop and validate game prototypes including created, found or adapted audio-visual and narrative assets.

๐Ÿคนโ€โ™€๏ธ Manage and control - Work in a structured and methodical way both individually as well as in a group context using relevant processes and tooling to facilitate their iterative process.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ผ Professional skills - Demonstrate professionalism as a game design specialist as co-worker, communicator and in the quality of products.

๐Ÿ’ช Our way of working

  • Together we discuss a project brief (see examples: Project Briefings).
  • Before the groups start, you may optionally present your case to our students.
  • At the start of the project, one member of the student group will contact you with a project brief and to plan the sprint demos. The demos can be held in Strijp TQ, online, or at your office.
  • The final demo will be at the Innovations Insight event in our InnovationLab.
  • Towards the end, we will evaluate the project and discuss opportunities for the next semester.

We prefer to work without any additional NDAs.
