To make the work of Game Design and Technology students at Fontys ICT more visible, the Dogfood Studios team, together with students, built an arcade cabinet in which the games made by students can be played publicly in the department. The arcade provides a beautiful play platform, which has been created with various input devices (joystick and keyboard), sound, a top panel display for branding the game or as an extra perspective/dimension in the game. The workflow to make the students’ games available on the arcade cabinet has also been made relatively easy: students can upload their game themselves via a digital submission and delivery procedure, a virus scan (by 60 virus scanners) and unlocking in a beautiful menu structure with an attractive digital cover, visible and playable on the arcade cabinet.
This project was also subsidised by Edtech, as this ’experiment’ contributes didactically to the enthusiasm of current ICT students, as it provides them with a platform to showcase their creations. For prospective students it is an inspiring portfolio and for partners in the field it is a showcase of what students learn in the curriculum, and what they can offer during an internship or graduation project. The ultimate goal of this project is to create a lasting impact within our educational offering with the arcade cabinet.
