Design a BCI-experience that allows players to explore environments that shift and transform based on their real-time brainwave data.
The aim of this project is to create a (walking simulator) game where the virtual environment dynamically transforms in response to the player’s brainwave data captured via an electroencephalogram (EEG) device. This experience will provide an immersive metaphor for how our unique cognitive states shape our perceptions of the world around us.
While traversing serene landscapes, players’ brainwaves will be monitored and translated into visually striking alterations of the environment. They don’t have to be directly linked to meaningful interpretations of the brainwave patterns (such as focus, calm), but use patterns in which people differ.
This reduces the effort in calibrating or interpreting the brainwave data in anything other that external variables. The core goal is to craft an explorative gameplay experience that fosters awareness of how our internal neural processes, often invisible from the outside, fundamentally influence the realities we inhabit.
Through this transformed realm, players can develop a deeper understanding of the subjective nature of human experience.
Scope and Requirements
The game:
- should use EEG technology
- have a transformative element, and have a focus on creating the abovementioned personal experience
- can be a linear or open-world experience
Otherwise, the project allows for a lot of freedom in terms of game design.
Starting Resources
- Available hardware: Neurosity Crown
- Starter code to use the hardware in Unity are readily available
- You will get help interpreting the brainwave signal into meaningful triggers/values, so you can focus on the MDA of the experience
Expected Deliverables
The expected deliverables will be:
- a feasible game design that incorporates this technology,
- a working, playable prototype and gameplay trailer
