We challenge you to create an fun pod racer experience for our VR center, using the YawVR.

YawVR offers a motion simulator with multiple degrees of freedom that allows players to get immersed into driving or flying simulation games. This project is ideal for teams that want to uncover new ground.

VR and Racing can be a powerful combination, but getting the right game feeling and player feedback is a real challenge.

The scope of the project focuses on the creation of a full game loop that allows user-testing of a base racing experience. The racing vehicle itself is a hovercraft / anti-gravity ship, and the track can be a start-to-finish racing course (so no laps).

While this scope sounds limited, it already offers a lot of challenges to be tackled. From finding the correct level pacing to building the vehicle and its control interfacing.

Ideally, the game can be playtested in early stages to allow user feedback and nausea checks - as we hope that the use of a simulator will reduce nausea in comparison to static set-ups.

Scope and Requirements

  • YawVR use is a must
  • Unreal is preferred but Unity is allowed
  • Aim for a Mario Kart experience, not a physics realism

Starting Resources

  • The YawVR is available on location
  • Enversed can support with art development

Expected Deliverables

  • Game Design Document
  • Gameplay trailer
  • Source code and assets (git repo)
  • YawVR game (build)
  • Handover instructions
