Design a creepy game about Face Recognition Technology for teenagers to enable teachers to start discussions in the classroom about the darkside options of this technology in the future.

Night of the Nerds is:

  • An annual one day live event on Strijp in Eindhoven (3.500 visitors)
  • Aim: inspire young people (14-19 year) for creativity & technology
  • A program with attractive activities, such as workshops, short lectures & interactive experiences.
  • Themes: robotics, gaming, VR, sound design, AI, creative coding, etc
  • Our focus for 2024 is also to develop appealing tools for secondary education teachers that give them support in mandatory courses such as digital awareness and good citizenship

Context of the Challenge:

  • Within secondary education, the courses of digital awareness and good citizenship are mandatory
  • There are relatively few tools for teachers for the course digital awareness for teenagers (15 -17 years old)
  • Until now there is almost no attention for face recognition technology (FRT) in education while developing at lightning speed. Especially FRT in combination with artificial intelligence.
  • Besides the many benefits of FRT, such as user covenience, efficiency in customs, health organizations, police and detection, FRT can be abused by corporations, governments, criminals and social media platforms.
  • Night of the Nerds aims to provide a solution by: 1) providing teachers with accessible information about the comforts and dangers of FRT for teenagers in particular and 2) Introducing teenagers to the dark sides of FRT in an appealing way. This with the idea to make it easier for teachers to discuss the FRT topic in the classroom
  • Our challenge for you is related to this last point: introducing teenagers to the dark sides of FRT in an appealing way

Scope and Requirements

  • There is a preference for VR game. A game for an iPad / tablet is a second option.
  • The game may be in Dutch or English
  • The game should match with te experiental world of teenagers (age 15-17 years). Be sure to do some user testing.
  • Create a game in which the player (one person) has to avoid FRT cameras and devices with FRT cameras.
  • Avoiding FRT cameras can be done in different ways. Be realistic in the game about how to avoid face recognition cameras / devices.
  • To increase the impact of the game and make the game tangible: incorporate dark creepy mini stories in the game. It is up to you how you incorporate the mini stories in the game
  • We give you suggestions for the mini stories. Of course it is an option to create the mini stories yourself. If that’s the case, think about to use ChatGPT toe help you
  • Visual design and sound: We have a preference for a futuristic dark creepy atmosphere.
